Information Literacy Survey – Help Us Define It!

Information literacy is not a static concept, and nor should it be. As the world continues to change, so too does the need to ensure that we are equipped to recognise, understand, and evaluate the types of information produced by it.

The last official CILIP Definition of Information Literacy that the Information Literacy Group created was published in 2018, and while it remains a useful and well-constructed tool, eight years is a long time in the information landscape we live in. After collaborating with the Media Information Literacy Alliance (MILA) on a revised version of the MILA-ILG framework to be launched this autumn, the Information Literacy Group is planning on updating the CILIP definition of Information Literacy to include the contemporary and emerging challenges and opportunities that face us. This work is intended to provide a fresh perspective on information literacy that builds upon the work we have already done, and that can be used across all sectors to aid in your teaching, learning, workplace, and everyday life.

In order to create a definition that truly works for the community, we want to hear from you.

We have created an anonymous survey that aims to gather feedback, suggestions, and thoughts from our community on what you would find beneficial in an updated definition of Information Literacy. We want the 2026 definition to be as inclusive as possible, so no matter what sector you work in, we would love to hear your feedback!

Thank you all for helping to make sure that Information Literacy works for everyone.
