Meet the Committee: Sam Gill

What is your role on the committee?
Communications & Engagement Manager

When did you join and why?
I have worked on the ILG Comms Team for around three years, and when the vacancy arose, I decided to apply for this role to try to continue the good work done by my predecessors. Information literacy has become more important than ever with the rise of generative AI and the ability to manipulate the fabric of reality. We’re further from the ‘camera never lies’ adage than ever before!

What is your day job?
As Liaison Librarian for Histories, Languages and Cultures at the University of Liverpool, I work closely with academic departments to deliver information literacy skills to students at all levels of study, from undergraduate to PhD. Whether it is engaging whole cohort classes with referencing skills, or 1-2-1 support with our databases, my role is to help supply skills and sources to those who need them. I also take an active interest in our collections, both digital and physical, and work to build bridges between our libraries, museums and galleries and the wider academic community. I’ve been in the role for nearly four years and it is by far the most fulfilling position I’ve held in academia.

What are your other interests?
As well as fighting the battle with chronic smartphone addiction, I play drums in Liverpool-based band Rongorongo, and synthesiser in Feral Wheel. I also dabble in stop-motion animation, printmaking and mixed media collage which you can see examples of at my website here. I like cycling, cooking and many other words beginning with ‘C’.
