Meet the Committee: Pam McKinney, LIS representative

What is your role on the Committee?
I’m on the committee to represent academics and students from Library and
Information Science departments.

When did you join and why?
I joined in July 2024, and I’m excited to get to work! It’s really important that our
information literacy course content is informed by the very latest developments in
practice, and having a close relationship with the ILG committee will help us achieve
that. On the flip side, I can provide a link between the committee and new research
taking place in information literacy, and promote greater synergies between research
and practice.

What do you do in your role?
I’m a senior lecturer at the University of Sheffield Information School, I’ve been
working there for 14 years. I am the programme coordinator for the MA Librarianship
and I teach on our on-campus and distance learning modules in information literacy.
I lead a module on Business Intelligence and I’m interested in applying and
researching inquiry-based pedagogies. My research in information literacy has
focused on the relationship between information literacy and learning in higher
education, and the information literacy of self-tracking. I supervise PhD and masters
students researching information literacy.

What is your day job?
Being an academic is a really varied and interesting role, so it’s hard to define a
standard day! I could be doing a whole range of activities, for example meeting with
students, face-to-face or online teaching, marking, doing teaching development work
e.g. revising rubrics and designing new activities. I do a lot of writing (Grammarly
tells me I am more productive than 99% of Grammarly users!), and that writing
includes scholarly publications and research funding applications. I lead the
Librarianship programme team, which entails a range of administrative tasks, and I’m
the employability lead also for the programme so I support students in developing
those important skills while at university and maintaining relationships with alumni
and employers.

What are your other interests?
My go-to way to relax is to curl up with a good book. I’m a particular fan of
dystopian, fantasy and science-fiction. I’m a mum to 3 school-age kids and they
keep me very busy in the evenings and weekends.
