Thank you to Facet Publishing for contributing this blog post.
Information Literacy is a critical skill in today’s fast-paced digital world. CILIP defines it as “the ability to think critically and make balanced judgments about any information we find and use. It empowers us as citizens to reach and express informed views and to engage fully with society.” As the landscape of information consumption evolves, so too must the resources and research that support it.
Facet Publishing, the book publishing arm of CILIP, is dedicated to equipping library, information, education and heritage professionals with the highest quality content. Our mission aligns with CILIP’s commitment to promoting education, literacy, and professional excellence. By collaborating with leading authors and experts, we produce rigorously peer-reviewed books that not only contribute to academic discourse but also offer practical applications for professionals navigating the complexities of information literacy.
Our latest publications reflect this commitment to advancing the field. Recent titles such as The Kind Librarian by Helen Rimmer and Practical Tips for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Libraries by Beth Montague-Hellen highlight key areas of professional development, workplace wellbeing and inclusive practice. These books, alongside our extensive backlist, ensure that professionals have access to the latest insights and developments.
Information Literacy remains at the core of Facet’s publishing ethos. This year, we publish the subject-defining book, The Information Literacy Handbook edited by Karen F. Kaufmann and Clarence Maybee, which importantly frames Information Literacy as an academic discipline. As new challenges and opportunities emerge, we remain committed to providing timely, impactful and practical resources that empower professionals to excel.
Beyond publishing, we are dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive dialogue within the Information Literacy community. By amplifying a wide range of perspectives, we contribute to a richer, more representative discourse. Our engagement with the sector extends beyond books as we support conferences, research and professional development that drive innovation and knowledge-sharing.

My mentor, colleague and friend Paul G. Zurkowski, Esq. had been advocating for Information Literacy to be a stand-alone academic subject for all the years I was working with him to develop and spread IL/InfoLit/i-Literacy starting in 2010. He would be very pleased with the academic “The Information Literacy Handbook” which is a giant step towards one of his major goals. Thank you to Clarence Maybee, Karen F. Kaufmann, Facet Publishing and all the others involved in this major academic global undertaking. Sincerely, JK ” Water is to marine life as information is to people”
